Hannah Woodman: Between the Elements and the Artist

"This collection of work was produced directly in response to the beautiful new gallery space at Tremenheere. Surrounded by expansive sculpture gardens looking out towards the sea and St Michael’s Mount, there is a strong connection between the elements and the artist here. A sense of history hangs in the air, sitting quietly alongside the beautifully regenerated gardens and contemporary artwork. This prompted me to look back as well as forward while creating the exhibition. With artists such as Turner, Myles Birket Foster, Thomas Luny and Stanhope Forbes all finding inspiration in the same area, my interest was ignited in some of the great traditions of landscape painting. Embracing large scale themes of The Sublime, which hinge on the intrinsic power of nature and the awe-inspiring qualities of the elements at work, I’ve chosen to bring the outside in to Tremenheere; the fields, lanes and surrounding seas - in short, the space from which the site itself was carved. I can’t think of a more appropriate setting to pause and reflect on the relationship we have with our environment than Tremenheere"

A beautiful sheltered valley in West Cornwall, surrounded by woods, streams and dramatic vista, provides the perfect setting for this 22-acre exotic and sub-tropical garden.
